The 12 Books Program is a children's literacy initiative that serves disadvantaged children in Mesa with free books and reading mentors in order to break the cycle of poverty by helping them read at grade level by 4th grade.
The literacy gap has widened during the COVID-19 pandemic and disproportionately affects students living in poverty. In the elementary schools in Mesa that have the highest percentage of low-income families, only between 4%-27% of 3rd graders are proficient in reading. Kids in poverty who are not proficient by the end of 3rd grade are 13x less likely to graduate high school than their proficient peers not living in poverty. This puts them at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, and a continued cycle of poverty as adults.
You can help! As part of our reading mentor program, students also have access to our online library of read-aloud videos. Reading aloud to children is one of the most important factors in literacy development, and we want to help students have as much access to read-alouds as possible. Volunteers can create a video of themselves reading a picture book for us to use on our online library.
