Recruiting Organization: Springfield Promise Neighborhood
AmeriCorps VISTA member assignments align with strategic goals established by Promise in partnership with community partners and stakeholder groups. The goals coincide with the expansion of Promise activities through the Promise Zone partnerships and in cooperation with four elementary schools comprising the Zone: Fulton, Kenwood, Lincoln and Perrin Woods Elementary Schools, in addition to the Clark Early Learning Center which serves 3 and 4 year olds who will attend Promise Zone elementary schools. VISTA members will serve these larger purposes from our central office location located in the neighborhood.
VISTA ASSIGNMENT: COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Key Objective: To coordinate events, activities and research in resident-driven community needs by conducting an ongoing listening campaign in the Promise Zone neighborhoods and by establishing resident leadership opportunities. Activities: Develop multiple event opportunities to work with resident groups to establish responses in the areas of safety, youth opportunities, and economic development; create with administrative team and in association with partners the instruments to be used in listening campaign; work with residents in collecting data; work with Administrative team to consider ways first to provide incentives to residents who are involved and to celebrate results; build and promote resident leadership opportunities and training activities; enhance and extend resident-led fundraising in alliance with the SPN team.
VISTA ASSIGNMENT: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Key Objective: To develop partnerships that provide educational opportunities for parents and children living in target neighborhoods or attending target schools who are in need of academic or social skill recovery. Activities: Conduct meetings with partnership organizations working in the area of early literacy, adult literacy, and adult educational enhancement; create an ongoing record of family and child literacy development opportunities that can be shared with partners and families in the Promise Zone; working with Promise staff develop appropriate approaches to student and family literacy development; develop with partners programs to carry out literacy enhancement activities.
VISTA ASSIGNMENT: HEALTH AND FOOD ACCESS
Key Objective: To develop food resources and align community health resources with resident and parent leadership and education opportunities. Activities: Serve with or in accordance with local food initiatives including the local food council; develop with Promise staff plans for the full development of the Fuller Center garden space; work with the VISTA team to create volunteers and engage families for work at the Fuller Center site; develop with community partners including the OSU extension office opportunities for resident education around growing, preserving, and cooking food; develop a garden to table framework with Springfield City Schools parent education events or extended learning programs.
