The Groton Council on Aging is looking for a dedicated volunteer interested in becoming a trained Bone Builders Leader to teach a class of 20 seniors the Bone Builders curriculum twice a week.
Bone Builders, sponsored by Community Teamwork Senior Corp Volunteer Program, is a free fitness class opportunity designed for seniors. Using light weights, the routines are centered around slow, methodical movements. A study in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that low-weight, high repetition resistance training is especially effective for increasing bone mineral density in adults. Participants in the study experienced up to 8% bone density increases in their arms, pelvis, spine, and legs.
