Ottawa Food, a food policy council housed within the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, organizes an annual Pick for Pantries program. In this program, community members, kids, veterans, and more are encouraged to participate in local farmer's U-Pick, pay full price for the fruit they pick, and then we deliver all the fruit to local food pantries. The food pantries give the food to families experiencing hunger. This program is important because it engages local farmers, the land, and community members in the work of addressing health and hunger. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the top needed item in all our food pantries. As the health department, we strive to see fruit and veggie consumption rates go up therefore we do Pick for Pantries to remove the cost barrier to accessing these healthy foods. With this grant, we will engage those who frequent food pantries into Pick for Pantries, which has never been done before. With this money we will sponsor food insecure families to go pick their fruit alongside volunteers that are picking for the pantries. Many food insecure parents look for a way to "give back" to the programs that make a difference in their lives. We don't see food pantries as giving "hand outs" but we respect and value what parents are saying that they'd like a way to give as well as receive. I am applying for this grant to sponsor these families to be able to go pick fruit for pantries. This can be an important experience for kids and adults who are disconnected from where food comes from, and it's an active experience that the whole family can enjoy. Those who usually receive will now be in the role of volunteer in a fun, out door way that furthers healthy eating and works to show that there are localized solutions to hunger.

Mission Statement
The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) utilizes service as a strategy to address the state’s most pressing issues and empowers volunteers to strengthen communities.
Description
Since its founding in 1991, the MCSC has granted more than $100 million in public and private funds to community organizations enabling them to engage millions of Michigan citizens in volunteer service. This support has leveraged more than $85 million in local resources to further support these community volunteer initiatives.
Volunteerism doesn't just happen. Most social service and nonprofit organizations rely heavily on volunteers as a valuable human resource; that resource must be stewarded carefully and supported continuously. Volunteer recruitment, management, training, placement, and recognition require resources and attention. With continued public and private support, along with the necessary training, resources, and coordination needed to help people serve, volunteerism can become a way of life for all Michigan citizens.
It is our vision that all Michigan residents, beginning at an early age and continuing for a lifetime, meet community needs and find personal fulfillment through service-learning and volunteering. Michigan is an ideal place to live and is recognized nationally because its citizens believe so strongly in the value of service as a way of life.
