CITY Center for Collaborative Learning’s mission is to "design, implement, and
advance exemplary practices in teaching and learning that transform the lives of
young people and their educators." The organization operates 3 small charter
schools: City High School (approximately 190 students in grades 9-12), Paulo Freire
Freedom Schools-Downtown and Paulo Freire Freedom School-University (each
with approximately 75 students in grades 6-8). CITY Center for Collaborative
Learning’s schools specialize in providing environments where students are known
as individuals, cared for, happy, and held to high academic expectations, given
project-based learning that inspires students to think intensively and critically and
delve deeply into content, and given field experiences and internships creating
opportunities to learn from local, regional and national experts and mentors.

Project Focus Areas and Activities
A. Urban Gardening: The AmeriCorps member will co-teach a Desert Youth
Gardening class for 280 minutes per week. They will work with students to
maintain an on-campus garden and aquaponics system. They will also maintain
City High’s planter with the seed library downtown and continue to strengthen the
relationship with the library.

B. After-School Program: The AmeriCorps member will transport students to and
from the farm once a week to teach an after-school farm program. City High
School has 15 passenger vehicle that can be used for this purpose.
Transportation could also involve using their personal vehicle and/or taking the
bus with groups of students. They will teach students how to farm organically
through hands-on experience maintaining City High’s eight plots. They will also
coordinate efforts to grow and distribute a variety of food crops throughout the
year. Additionally, they will work with the staff at City High School and Las
Milpitas Community Garden to engage students in activities at the farm on
Wednesdays when all farm chores have been completed.

C. Business Education: Las-Milpitas Plot Maintenance: The AmeriCorps
member will spend approximately 10 hours per week at Las Milpitas maintaining
the garden plots They will also build and maintain relationships with the Las
Milpitas farm crew and other community gardeners.

D. Liaison: The AmeriCorps member will serve as liaison with Las Milpitas
Community Garden and the City High National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
Coordinator. They will help coordinate special events being hosted by City High at Las Milpitas and attend Thursday morning workdays (when possible) at the
farm to become better acquainted with farm staff, fellow community gardeners,
and farming techniques used at the garden.


Schedule Requirements: The Desert Youth Gardening class is scheduled
for Tuesday and Friday afternoons (1:30 - 3:00) and Farm Crew and/or
Culinary afterschool programs are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon
(1:00 - 4:00). Family programs may be scheduled monthly on Thursday
evenings from 5:30 - 7:00pm.

service hours.

We offer full time and part time positions that come with a Segal Education Award that can be used for tuition costs or to repay student loans. Some positions also have a living allowance or stipend.
