Casa Alitas, a program run by Catholic
Community Services of Southern Arizona, is a respite house for asylum seekers that
offers refuge and hospitality to recent migrant families in Tucson, AZ. They have
undergone stressful processing with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(ICE) to gain humanitarian parole, which allows them to stay in the U.S. legally while
their asylum request is processed. Most families come from Latin America and
typically stay between one and three days. The role of the AmeriCorps Site and
Volunteer Coordinator is to oversee the coordination of the house and hospitality
needs, tending to families daily through filling out standard intake forms, assisting
the families in contacting their family members or sponsors in the U.S., explaining
certain legal rights and resources, explaining their travel tickets and schedules. As
well as exterior projects, including but not limited to: updating legal service resources
and onward movement packets, creating and maintaining up to date systems for
collecting and filing data, and connecting guests with services in other U.S. states.
Responsibilities are always changing, due to the constantly changing flow of
immigration and the varying needs of individual guests.
