Direct Patient Support : Sitting with patients, reading aloud, assisting patients with certain activities, or just listening. Sometimes, volunteers function as interpreters between patient, families and hospice staff. Light housekeeping specific to the needs of the patient may also be provided.

Family Support and Respite: To support the family, a volunteer may be asked to pick up and deliver groceries or personal items to the home. A volunteer may also be asked to transport a patient to an appointment with their hospice physician. The role of the primary caregiver can be very stressful. One of the most important roles a volunteer can provide is respite. Respite is when the volunteer spends time, usually an hour or two, with the patient allowing the primary caregiver time alone or away.

Bereavement Support: Bereavement support is provided to the family, b the hospice, for 13 months after the patient's death. Volunteers are often used to support this process through clerical support, attending meetings and/or providing assistance with bereavement mailings.

Special skills and interests: Hospice volunteers with special skills may be asked to provide adjunct therapies that may include pet therapy, music therapy, aroma therapy, massage, imagery and other associated cares as identified by the individual hospice organization. Qualified volunteers who provide professional services for the hospice must meet all requirements associated with their specialty area. If licensure or registration is required by the State, the volunteer must be licensed or registered.
