The Friends of Johnson County Library is a member-supported nonprofit organization promoting community awareness and participation in library services. They serve as library advocates, raise supplemental funds, and promote literacy and lifelong learning. The funds we raise from the sale of book purchases and memberships to support the Johnson County Library collection development and programing.

The Friends are currently recruiting new board members. Here are the expectations for leaders to serve in this capacity.

Each individual Board Member is expected to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs.
  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements.
  • Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization.
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy.
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.
  • Participate fully in committee work: we are a working board through committees.
  • Participate fully in monthly, hour-long committee meetings.
  • Be a fearless fundraiser to support substantial growth of our network of dues-paying members.
  • Aid in identifying candidates to build upon the Board.
  • Assist in negotiations between Friends and the Library & any partner organizations.
  • Make business and programming decisions.
  • Make community connections.
Volunteers interested in serving in the capacity will need to submit a resume. Candidates may be referred to a board committee for an interview before being selected.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Johnson County Library is to provide access to information and promote life long learning and growth for all ages. Volunteers are vital to the daily operation of all 14 of our locations across Johnson County. You can volunteer in an ongoing position for 2-3 hours per week and a minimum 6 month commitment or you can sign up to join us for one time events as your schedule allows - join us!

Description

Our primary need includes materials management. Volunteers assist with pulling books that need to be transferred to other locations. In addition, they assist with sorting and shelving of materials. If you enjoy working with books, this is the job for you!
