ORGANIZATION: Fresh Charity

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

We at Fresh Charity know it is not a level playing field and some young people have a rough start; a disrupted home life, bullying, abuse, poverty, disability of themselves or a family member.

We are a disability confident employer and are proud to welcome a diverse team.

We support young people to change their trajectory and use recovery from adversity to spur them on to great things. We believe that with the right support, challenges don’t have to hold you back. We want to involve young people in taking the charity forward, so this role is perfect for a young person who is passionate about helping the community.

You will be helping out the Fresh team with a range of activities depending on your interests and skills.
If you would like to join our admin team keeping the charity running and growing you can combine administrative elements (such as planning, research, identifying and recruiting the people and resources needed) with people-centred elements (such as phone calls, meetings, site visits and reaching out to people and organisations who may be able to help). This is a great opportunity to develop both your administration skills and interpersonal skills. Alternatively, come to a range of events that we organise and help out at via our volunteering group. We help all sorts of charities and causes, both out and about and with online volunteering opportunities too!

Essential, skills, experience and qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a creative approach to tasks, with a 'can-do’ attitude. They will have confidence to work with their own initiative and not be afraid to ask questions to ensure they are on the right track. A good level of
English is also required. Administration skills and attention to detail are required. They must be good with people - previous personal or professional experience to demonstrate this would be an asset.
Do not worry as we provide on-the-job training to enable you to complete the role to a high standard.

Employability Support
We are committed to providing you with the support you need to supercharge your employability skills during this work experience placement.

We provide in-house training and induction. Full on-the-job training enables you to complete the role to a high standard. You will be working alongside the trustees and will be allocated a mentor who will guide you to get the most from the placement and seek feedback from you as to how best to help you do so. You will be encouraged to create checklists and taught how to use organisational tools that help you manage your workload and stay on track. As a Disability Confident Employer we provide training on working in a disability friendly workplace.

We teach the importance of attendance management, reliability, timekeeping, teamwork and the appropriate way to communicate with colleagues and others in a professional environment. Communication skills are nurtured and encouraged bidirectionally, with our trustees dedicated to valuing feedback given by all.

Monitoring and review: regular reviews with your mentor offer opportunities to discuss performance and areas for improvement. Throughout the placement there will be ongoing training and assessment at a pace that suits your enthusiasm and capabilities, with opportunities to grow and expand within the role, to expand the role and to try different roles within the organisation.

We will support access to Mentors from the business community who can provide support in a wider career sense. We will be working with Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) to reach various online training courses in work skills, CV writing and Interview techniques. Through DCCI you can work with other local suppliers providing certificates for completed training courses. We will use the DCCI’s service support to identify any issues and gaps in training and to be a contact for any questions that may arise. We’ll help you demonstrate transferable skills and provide an up-to-date reference.

Mission Statement

Our priorities Raising awareness of the difficulties that some young people face and reaching out to young people in need Emotional support, therapy, guidance and coaching to help young people identify and achieve their goals, with a particular focus on self-development through helping others Promotion of positive, healthy and safe lifestyle choices Provision of education, training, mentoring and positive influences, creative therapies including arts and music, sports, volunteering and work experience placements Providing a safe and welcoming environment where young people can express themselves, feel valued, develop their self-esteem and discover their ambition, including the provision of a physical space where young people can get away from negative influences

Description

We started in 2009 and registered as a charity in 2012. Back then, our main work was supporting a children’s home in Kenya by sending volunteers, providing education, mentoring and physical provisions. Through this work, another substantial impact arose: the positive effect of volunteering on the volunteers themselves.

Over the years our charity has naturally evolved to focus on this important work, and to extend our work with young people in the UK who have experienced difficult backgrounds. We found that by encouraging them to engage in helping others, they experienced an increase in self esteem and a sense of purpose that was able to drive them forwards with enthusiasm.

In 2017 we started to offer emotional support, training and volunteer placements in the UK at our home, Pause Cat Cafe. Through these placements we have helped hundreds of young people, particularly those who need extra support due to shyness, disability or learning difficulties.
