Position: Volunteer Pet Companion

Reports To: Volunteer Coordinator

Job Description Summary

The Pet Companion Volunteer works directly with hospice patients, families and facility residents offering comfort and support through pet visitation in patients’ home, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and memory support facilities.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  • Provides companionship, comfort and support to assigned patients and families in accordance with the patient care plan
  • Responding appropriately to patient/caregiver inquiries
  • Provides pet visits to patients and families in a diverse array of care settings
  • Maintains and reports accurate documentation of volunteer hours and mileage
  • Completes all assignments and notifies Volunteer Coordinator if unable to volunteer
  • Immediately reports any incident, accident or concern to the Volunteer Coordinator or other Hospice staff
  • Establish and maintain a strong and healthy relationship with patients and caregivers
  • Work in collaboration with the hospice team
  • Track and maintain patient information when required

Position Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate well with people of diverse background and ages
  • All pets must have documentation of current shots and licensure according to local and state guidelines
  • Ability to solve complex problems efficiently
  • Maintains open communication with other team members, reporting events or changes of concern to the Volunteer Coordinator or other team members
  • Comfortable with death and the dying process
  • Ability to respect confidentiality at all times
  • Self-motivated, dependable and responsible
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in a changing environment
  • Able to practice proper infection control
  • Able to maintain appropriate personal and professional boundaries
  • Comfortable with death and the dying process
  • Must be 18 years of age
