ORGANIZATION: Community Education Partnerships

Learning changes lives and futures. Share your love of learning by joining Community Education Partnerships’ (CEP) caring team of volunteer tutors at a shelter for families in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. CEP provides tutoring and mentoring to pre-K to 12th grade students experiencing homelessness. CEP Tutors are a consistent and caring presence in the life of our students, fostering a deep love of learning and ensuring that they are set up for academic success.

Tutors are needed for our twice-weekly reading sessions, ongoing through the 22-23 School Year.

  • Mondays 6 - 7:30pm
  • Wednesdays 6 - 7:30pm
  • We also have a need for general support & other structured activity support throughout the week between the hours of 5 - 7:30pm

About:
  • Tutors are paired with 1-2 students for an hour-long reading session
  • Tutors will use an online platform called Storyworld to guide sessions with your student
  • Training and ongoing support provided
  • 2 hour one-time orientation and 1-1.5 hour(s) per week of tutoring
  • Minimum age 16

Safety Information: Social distancing, masks, and enhanced hygiene measures are required. All volunteers and must be fully vaccinated. Tutoring takes place at our Children's Learning Center, located in the shelter. Windows remain open at all times and air purifiers are are constantly running.

The mission of Community Education Partnerships (CEP) is to increase the learning opportunities and enhance the academic achievement of students experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in the Bay Area.

Description

The primary function of CEP is to recruit and train volunteers to provide high-quality academic tutoring for children experiencing housing insecurity in the pre-kindergarten - 12th grade school system. Volunteers get matched with a student with whom they meet once per week, typically at a shelter or transitional home.
