Introduction

Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY) is a Bolivian NGO, made up of a team of committed professionals and volunteers from Bolivia and around the world. Founded in 1992, CIWY was the pioneer of the environmental movement in Bolivia and is recognised nationally and internationally. CIWY currently manages three wildlife sanctuaries: Machia (Cochabamba), Ambue Ari (Santa Cruz) and Jacj Cuisi (Rurrenabaque). Each sanctuary offers refuge to wild animals rescued from trafficking, offering them a better quality of life.

Overview

Jacj Cuisi is currently home to 2 pumas (Puma concolor). The job includes feeding the cats, cleaning the enclosures, providing enrichment, and general maintenance of the area. One of the cats is walked on a rope through the jungle. You will also be in charge of volunteers from your area.

Description

The function requires organization and autonomy in order to be able to carry out the daily routine, which includes feeding, cleaning, enrichment, maintenance of the area and supervision of the work of the volunteers. The Coordinator Assistant must work in coordination with the Cat Coordinator and must be committed to teamwork, be responsible and self-initiative. The main objective is that the animals receive the best care and attention possible, in the most efficient way.

Responsibilities

The Cat Coordinator Assistant will be in charge of the following functions:

• Support the Cat Coordinator in the care of the felines: feeding, cleaning of enclosures, enrichment and general maintenance of the area.

• Training, introduction and organization of volunteers and interns new to the area.

• Implement measures to ensure the welfare of both animals and volunteers.

• Organize the agenda of activities related to cleaning, feeding, medical treatment and coordination of free days for volunteers in the area.

• Monitor the conduct and performance of all area volunteers and notify the Administrator or Volunteer Coordinator of any issues.

• Understand, update and adapt the diets of the animals in the area according to their nutritional requirements and according to the availability of food.

• Ensure the cleanliness of the area and the health of the felines.

• Administer medicines and treatments to felines that need it under the authorization of the veterinarians. Being in direct communication with the veterinarians to guarantee the health of the felines.

• Carry out, when necessary, general repairs in the area.

• Maintain, signpost and update the trails and their maps.

• Ensure the proper use and maintenance of all sanctuary equipment by all volunteers in the area.

• Keep updated the files of the animals in the area. Record observations, deaths, births, illnesses and behavioral changes in the felines of our sanctuary.

• Submit monthly reports to the Directive on what happened in the area.

• Know the emergency protocols in case of attacks, escapes or accidents.

• Be in contact and direct communication with the main office and Volunteer Coordinator to assure and help volunteers with any problem they have.

• Attend meetings led by the administrator or the president and maintain good communication with them.

Experience/Skills required

Candidates should have a strong interest in felines, their behavior and their welfare. Ideally they should have volunteered or worked with big cats before, preferably with us at CIWY. Candidates should be physically fit and able to spend a lot of time in the jungle walking with the cats. In addition, they must have at least an intermediate level of English and Spanish, oral and written.

Conditions

CIWY’s three sanctuaries are located in remote areas of Bolivia and conditions vary. You will be living with Bolivian and international staff and volunteers who work hard every day to carry the project forward. You must be patient, flexible and be prepared to face difficult conditions, often physically demanding. You will enjoy the privilege of being a part of the process of giving a second chance to wildlife rescued from illegal trafficking and pet trade. Your day-to-day activities will be focused on maintaining and improving the welfare and quality of life of animals in their process of reintegration to the wild.

Commitment & Work Hours

The Coordinator Assistant must commit to work for a period of six months beginning after the first two weeks as a volunteer. The Coordinator Assistant position comes with the responsibility of supporting the administration of a management area. Our assistants and coordinators are usually the first to arrive and the last to leave the areas to ensure proper functioning. The work includes cleaning the area and the enclosures, feeding the animals, construction, and training the volunteers. Hours are 7 am to 5:30 pm daily with breaks for breakfast and lunch. You will enjoy 1 day off each week and a week of vacation after the third month of work in coordination with the Administration of the sanctuary.

Accommodation

In Jacj Cuisi, mobile phone reception is restricted, there is only reception in certain places and only the Entel line works. There is limited electricity and accommodation is shared in a large double-decker dorm or twin-bedded rooms. There are two bathrooms with an attached shower. A nearby stream is used for resting and bathing.

You will be provided with bedding and mosquito nets (when available), but we recommend that you bring a sleeping bag or blanket in the dry season when it can sometimes get cold at night.

Bilateral agreement

CIWY does not receive any funding from the Government, the only economic contribution comes from volunteers and donations. CIWY will provide you with food and lodging, however, we cannot offer a salary. When applying for this position, you must take into account expenses that are your responsibility, such as visa procedures and travel costs to the sanctuary. CIWY will support you with the required paperwork.
