English Together is identifying volunteers for its Spring Cycle volunteer activities. English Together is a non-profit organization that leverages research on language learning and the rich history of student volunteering at Stanford to provide English language "coaching" to the Latinx immigrant workforce in the Bay Area. No Spanish is needed. We work with workers who want to improve their lives and their existing English. Volunteers meet virtually with workers or face to face.

We want to bring members of the Silicon Valley community to support low-wage workers to become successful.Volunteers function as language "practice partners" with adult Spanish-speaking workers using our materials. They need not speak Spanish (although it is useful for working with absolute beginners). All that is needed is good will and a desire to invest in the often invisible Latinx workforce in Silicon Valley. The learners we work with are eager to work on practical, work-related English in order to reach their fullest potential and to help their children succeed.

We offer training and guidance for volunteers before we match them with immigrant workers. To learn more, go to our website English Together , or register for a one-hour virtual meeting here: https://englishtogether.org/interest/ .We will get started with interest meetings for interested volunteer activities starting March 24th, 2024.

About English Together

Location:

555 Bryant Street #181, Palo Alto, CA 94301, US

Mission Statement

English Together supports "the invisible people" in Silicon Valley, that is, Latino workers who are the gardeners, the cleaners, the cooks who work in low-wage jobs. The major hurdle many of them face is not being equipped with the English they need to succeed in jobs that require the ability to interact in English. English Together is a non profit 501(c)(3) organization that supports the development of workplace English in immigrant adults in Silicon Valley. The organization focuses on the practical, every-day English that workers need and, at the same time, works to create rich connections between ordinary speakers of English and Latinos/as. We seek volunteers who can give one hour of their time, on zoom or in person, once a week for 10 weeks. We work in 10 week Cycles (Fall, Winter and Spring). Our Fall Cycle is currently in progress, and our Winter Cycle begins January 8, 2024.

Description

Since we started in 2021, we have worked with parents of English language learners in Silicon Valley schools (Menlo Atherton, Eastside College Preparatory in East Palo Alto) and with other area organizations (Familias Unidas in Redwood City) and currently partner with the San Mateo Foster City (SMFC) School District and the ReachSV Mompreneurs program.

This coming January, we will continue to expand the program. We seek volunteers who can give one hour of their time, on zoom or in person, once a week for 10 weeks. Volunteers "coach" learners using our materials. Our partners help us identify adults who want to practice workplace English, and we recruit volunteers to work with them creating rich connections between individuals and communities. We offer training and guidance for volunteers before we match them with Latino parents who want to improve their English. We need volunteers who are ordinary speakers of English to serve as "practice partners." Monolingual English speakers to a great job as practice partners. Spanish-speaking volunteers are only needed to work with absolute beginners.
