About the Pet Cancer Foundation

The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Estimates suggest that 12M dogs and cats are developing cancer every year, roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America. We need to do more for our furry friends, and we are building a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help them and their families.

Over the past 24 months, the organization has grown to a team of almost three hundred volunteers working virtually across the United States, Canada, and another half dozen countries worldwide. As we work to become the leading information resource provider in the field of animal cancer, we are searching for an experienced Associate Director of Content Development to co-lead our Online Communities department. That is where and how you can help us.

About the Position

The Associate Director, Content Development, leads the organization's content and engagement strategies for all PCF online communities. The Associate Director for content, is accountable for developing and directing content strategies that work to fulfill the organization’s purpose of public education, information, and awareness of pet cancer and health topics, intended to improve the general wellbeing of cats and dogs. Reporting to the Associate Director, are Content Strategists and the Art Manager, who are responsible for turning the organizational/departmental direction into individual channel strategies and content calendars, which become our posts/articles. The Associate Director will assist in the development and refinement of content development and engagement standards and guidelines, to ensure all published content follow the authorized style, tone, and standards of the organization. Part of the role is to coach team leaders to maintain regular engagement with their teams, promote teamwork and ownership of deadlines. The Associate Director will collaborate with various stakeholders across the organization to support the organization’s many programs and efforts, being led by other department stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition and implement of a content planning framework that guides the Content Strategists to develop monthly content strategies that enables PCF’s objectives in direct support of the achievement of its vision.
  • Assists and supports the development of an engagement planning framework that guides the Moderation team to participate in active conversations with the public through inbound comments, as well as regular outreach.
  • Assists creation of training and development programs that instruct and guide our OC team to excel in their various roles.
  • Approves the publishing calendar and participates in the final review of content prior to publication on PCF’s online communities, ensuring it aligns with the strategic direction, supports the achievement of the organization’s objectives and will be of interest to the community.
  • Assists with the establishment, implementation, and continuous improvement of PCF’s standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborates with various business units including Marketing and Communications, Website Editorial, Revenue and Human Resources, to ensure our online communities meet a wide variety of strategic objectives, supporting the overall marketing plan, promoting fundraising efforts, recruitment of team members, etc.
  • Takes ownership of the greater purpose of Online Communities’ role, ensuring our content mix accurately reflects the culture of PCF, to provide a hand-up (support) before asking for a hand-out.
  • Leads and motivate the team, ensuring that business and project plans are effectively translated into specific individual and team goals to ensure the successful achievement of these objectives.

About You

You are well-versed in targeted content creation and have an in-depth understanding of what it takes to generate content for a difficult subject like cancer. Your extended career in communications, public relations or journalism has provided the depth of character that comes from compassionately listening and telling the stories of others. At your core, you are a storyteller, and have experience in leading other passionate creators. The Pet Cancer Foundation is an organization that provides education and awareness on an overly sensitive topic and the incumbent will understand that the content being published by our organization needs to be created within its core principles and in its distinct voice. You have:

  • 10 years’ experience in a similar as a senior communications professional, senior editor, or assignment editor
  • A Diploma or bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • 7 years’ experience in leading teams, having excellent leadership, organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to provide critical feedback in a suitable manner
  • Experience creating and editing emotionally challenging content for diverse audiences
  • A work history that highlights the above

  • The time commitment is 8-10 hours per week.
