Are you a law student looking to see what pro bono work looks like? A paralegal? The Justice & Diversity Center is inviting you to volunteer at our new Bayview Legal Advice and Referral Clinic, occurring on the fourth Friday of every month. This is an in-person volunteer opportunity and we are recruiting for August - September!

Clinic Details

Dates: Aug 26 & Sep 23

Location: Bayview Hunter’s Point YMCA, 1601 Lane St, San Francisco, CA 94124

Time Commitment: 2:30pm - 6 pm, 3.5 hours.

Extent of Volunteering:

  1. Welcome Clients to the clinic - Intake Volunteers will rotate through the Greeter Role (30 minutes at a time) and explain the clinic process to clients.
  2. Conduct Client Intakes - Clients will be provided a number and asked to sit in a waiting area. Intake Volunteers will call a client up into an intake room where they will ask the client a series of questions and fill out an intake form.
  3. Direct Clients to Next Steps - Working with our supervising attorney, Intake Volunteers will provide clients referrals and connect clients with attorneys.

LARCs serves clients on a walk-in basis, meaning that we will not know how many clients we will have until the day of. Intakes will slow down and pause in the second half of the clinic, dependent on whether or not our volunteer attorney reach their capacity. This means that intakes may finish before 6 pm. We are also asking that you arrive for a brief 30 minute consultation at 2:30pm, where we will answer questions on your role, and introduce you to YMCA staff and out attorneys.

It is crucial that our volunteers maintain confidentiality while conducting intakes, and we will have Mandarin and Spanish Interpreters available.
