Recruiting Organization: A Free Bird
A Free Bird is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization based in New York City. Our organization provides children diagnosed with cancer the opportunity to explore their artistic passions. Artistic expression has been proven to play an instrumental role in the healing process. We support children affected by cancer in their exploration of a range of self-expression such as art, music, acting, poetry, writing, singing, and other creative mediums.
This role consists of managing the accounting responsibilities of A Free Bird. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis you will work with our team of finance and accounting interns to track and record the status of all contributions and expenses. It will be important that you help ensure all internal control policies and procedures are adhered to within the organization. You will work closely with external accountants in the preparation of the annual financial statements with footnotes, as well as the annual tax filings. Additionally, you will take the lead in the development of our budget by working alongside our various internal departments such as Marketing, Fundraising, Business & Operations, and Programs. It is essential that a candidate has excellent communication and leadership skills since management of finance volunteers and interns is a key aspect of the job.
Responsibilities:
Management of finance and accounting volunteers and interns which includes helping volunteers
with any queries and assigning job responsibilities; overseeing and reviewing that their tasks are
performed accurately.
Monitor cash activity, review accounts receivable and accounts payable day-to-day operations to
ensure accuracy of billing and invoice payments as well as vendor setup & maintenance.
Review and analyze monthly financial statements prepared by an external accountant.
Development of annual financial statements with footnotes for filing by an external accountant.
Assist external accountants in the annual Federal and State Tax filings.
Work with the Business & Operations department on building quarterly and annual budgets.
Review and approve in-kind donation valuations as prepared by interns
Required Qualifications:
2-3 years experience in professional financial accounting
Excellent working knowledge of Excel functions
Strong internal control background
Controllership / Bookkeeping experience with attention to detail
Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
Previous experience in managing a team of 4-6 people
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified Public Accountant or retired professional accountant
Previous experience of working within the nonprofit sector
