ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: WriteGirl

Get inspired! Make an impact! Support the voices of teens in Los Angeles and be part of a positive community of creative writers!

WriteGirl, now in its 22nd season, is a creative writing and mentoring organization that empowers teens in Los Angeles through mentoring relationships with women writers. Mentors work with teens, one-on-one, and participate in large-scale monthly writing workshops with about 100 teens and 100 mentors. All programming/events are currently held in our interactive online event spaces until it’s safe to resume large-scale in-person events. ( Get a sneak peek of WriteGirl here!)

WriteGirl is seeking Greater Los Angeles-area writers who identify as women or nonbinary in all genres including fiction, poetry, journalism, screenwriting, songwriting, copywriting, business writing and more to help mentor teens (girls, nonbinary and trans youth), inspire them to express their creative ideas with compassion and provide them with an individualized pathway to college and careers. Notable WriteGirl alums include Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman, who credits WriteGirl for giving her the confidence to share her creative voice on a national stage. Applicants should have empathy, listening skills, kindness and a passion for helping to inspire young voices. Weekly, monthly and periodic mentoring opportunities available.

Support Volunteers: We are also seeking support with events, public relations, fundraising and partnerships.

All volunteers are required to complete a full-day online orientation/training, intake interview and in-person LiveScan criminal background check.

WriteGirl Commitment to Diversity and Inclusivity:

Since 2001, it has been our mission to raise up the voices of underrepresented and/or vulnerable youth, including Black, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, Indigenous, nonbinary, LGBTQIA, anyone with disabilities, and many others who are part of the community we serve. Our events, training and curriculum reflect our commitment to multiculturalism, equity, diversity, inclusion, access, anti-bias, anti-discrimination, and anti-racism.
