St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) of Tacoma, Pierce County is one of a few local non profits that provides immediate assistance to those facing an immediate financial crisis. We are able to do this through the funds we raise at a local level working upstream to prevent homelessness by providing spiritual, material, and direct financial assistance to those in need. We know that people who lose their homes face the uphill, seemingly impossible task of finding new housing. In providing direct financial assistance, SVDP is able to help stop the increase of homelessness in Pierce County by keeping families in their homes and providing basic needs, such as rent and utilities, through our Homelessness Prevention and Basic Needs Program.

Member Duties: AmeriCorps service schedule is Tues - Sat from 10am to 5pm with remote and in-person work options. A one-on-one is scheduled with the Executive Director once a week. You will work closely with the Executive Director to help build capacity via strategic development of donor relations, grant writing, and strategic planning for future sustainability while maintaining the donor database and acknowledgments. This is a chance to learn how to work with both individual and corporate donors, as well as methods for building new funding streams. Support the two annual fundraisers, the Beyond Vintage Dinner and Auction, and the Walk for the Poor. In this role, you will be one of two AmeriCorps members serving in VISTA with St. Vincent de Paul. You will also be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team (Learn more: unitedway-thurston.org/americorps-vista).

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
