The mission of Emergency Food Network (EFN) is to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse, and nutritious food supply so that no person goes hungry. EFN started when community leaders recognized the need for an organization that could source food collectively for the emergency food system. It quickly became apparent that the need was not temporary, so EFN was officially established as an independent 501(c)(3) in 1991. We now partner with over 70 local food pantries, hot meal sites, and shelters. By leveraging government, purchased, and donated food with produce grown at our Mother Earth Farm, we are able to provide our Partner Programs with more than one million pounds of food each month at no cost to them. This work would not be possible without help from community partners and volunteers. EFN has more than 100 partners that host EFN Food & Fund Drives and 2,000 volunteers each year. Volunteers repackage bulk foods, pull weeds and harvest fresh produce at EFN's Mother Earth Farm, support a variety of roles at our fundraising events, deliver food boxes for EFN's Home Delivery Program, and more, all in an effort to distribute more nutritious food to our neighbors in need.

Member Duties: HYBRID position - Please ask us for details. Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. This VISTA project will build capacity in EFN's volunteer and outreach programs by increasing the number and retention of volunteers at the Repack Project, Mother Earth Farm, EFN's Community Garden, and EFN fundraising events. This outreach involves researching online calendars and volunteer posting sites, tabling at community events, constructing e-newsletters, writing highlights about programs, posting on social media, and more. This VISTA will work closely with the Volunteer and Activities Coordinator to manage donor and volunteer databases and assist with managing volunteers. This position will also develop long-term strategies for utilizing volunteers to conduct outreach on behalf of the organization through communication and social media. These projects will improve EFN's ability to distribute more nutritious and diverse food items to our neighbors in need.

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
