The Orting Veterans Village is a tiny home village for 35 homeless veterans living in Pierce County, Washington. We strongly believe at Quixote Communities that everyone deserves safe and affordable housing. We work to provide housing for our community members experiencing homelessness in Thurston, Pierce, and Mason Counties in Washington state. We manage tiny house villages that offer communal living with rich peer mentorship and support. Our staff work side-by-side with residents to help them reach their individual goals and to connect them with various community services. Our houses are economically efficient, costing less than half of what it costs to build your average apartment. We also leave a smaller footprint with our less than 300 sq. ft. homes. But the most rewarding part of it all, is that our residents are no longer homeless. Housing is a primary need, first and foremost. Once residents are housed, they are then able to work on other aspects of their lives such as education, employment, substance use, physical/mental health and future housing needs. This is no easy feat. Our residents are resilient survivors, and we see their successes here every day.
Member Duties: This project builds capacity through creating relationships in the community to help volunteer, engage, and financially support the village. This VISTA project assists with local community engagement, overseeing volunteer events, and donor management that helps to build the effectiveness of the Orting Veterans Village and its residents. We have a lot of flexibility with service hours. The majority of the service will be Monday through Friday with some possible weekend and evening volunteer events.

Description
Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.
We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
