American Councils is seeking volunteer families in or around Madison, WI to host a U.S. Department of State-sponsored high school exchange student in the 2022-23 academic year. Could you or someone you know help welcome one of these students to the U.S. this August?

* Nur from Indonesia is a caring, curious student who loves cooking, playing with kids, and using her English skills to learn more about world cultures! Family is very important to Nur, who enjoys babysitting her young cousins and helping her mom in the kitchen. Nur has ambitious plans for her future: she wants to become a doctor so she can use her knowledge to help others. "I am looking forward to being a YES student and also a family member in your family and to spend a great and unforgettable year!"
* Haseeb from Pakistan is energetic and social, and he prides himself on being able to turn "any boring moment into the best memory of all." He enjoys playing sports, studying with his friends, and cooking with his family. Haseeb is an avid athlete, and he’s won cricket and baseball competitions at school. During his exchange year, Haseeb looks forward to learning all about American sports and outdoor activities in his host community, particularly camping, hiking, and football!
* Mohamed from Egypt can't wait to jump into American life! Athletic and motivated, Mohamed is a national rowing champion who is excited to explore American sports like baseball and football. He believes his exchange year will be a "remarkable opportunity to learn about the customs and traditions of Americans and their own culture!" Mohamed hopes that the friends he makes in the U.S. will last a lifetime and that his host family will be like a second family to him. Host Mohamed and create a lifelong, intercultural connection!

For decades, our exceptional exchange students have shared meals, holidays, and laughter with American host families. To date, over 40,000 students from more than 50 countries have been hosted in every US state. These students spend an academic year at local high schools, eagerly sharing their cultures, contributing to their new communities, and joining school activities.

Along the way, American Councils host families are supported by a Local Coordinator in their communities and our Washington, DC-based team. Year after year, our host families report that hosting with American Councils helped them, their children, and the exchange student grow as a family, as leaders, and as global citizens.

Description

American Councils for International Education is a premier, international nonprofit creating educational opportunities that prepare individuals and institutions to succeed in an interconnected and increasingly interdependent world.

Through academic exchanges, overseas language immersion, and educational development programs, American Councils designs and administers innovative programs that broaden individual perspectives, increase knowledge, and deepen understanding. After being immersed in other countries and cultures, our participants become culturally aware citizens of the world, contributing to mutual understanding and successful international collaboration.

From developing the first exchanges of Eurasian and American students and teachers in the 70s - to current initiatives supporting collaborative education between the U.S., Middle East, South America, Asia, and Africa - American Councils facilitates overseas experiences that create informed and empowered global citizens. Since 1974, American Councils has responded to the needs of the communities where we work with hundreds of robust, international education programs that include academic exchanges, language immersion, testing and assessment, professional training, community development, and scholarly research.
