Purpose of Position
The vision of Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia is to continually improve the welfare of urban wildlife. Our mission is to provide leadership in rehabilitating wildlife and in promoting the welfare of wild animals in the urban environment.
We run a wildlife hospital located on a single site at the edge of Burnaby Lake. We treat over 6,000 wild birds and bats each year and provide public education through 30,000 calls to our Wildlife Helpline. Our Business Operations department plans, coordinates and oversees all our programs including development, communications, resources and volunteering.
Each year, 300 volunteers participate in a range of positions both on and off site. We are currently seeking a volunteer to support the public visiting Wildlife Rescue to drop off animals, seek information, and donate to support our work.
All volunteers must be 16 years or older and provide a Criminal Record Check, proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination and full Covid-19 vaccination.
Qualifications
We are looking for:
* Good communication skills
* Friendly and enjoys interacting with the public
* Ability to speak clearly and eloquently about Wildlife Rescue’s mission, vision, day-today work, and current campaigns
* Some fundraising or interpretation experience would be an asset, but not required
Deliverables
The Welcome Volunteer is expected to ensure the highest standards of practice are achieved and maintained in accordance with the mission, vision and values of WRA, and to ensure adherence to all policies and legal requirements. All data and information will remain the property of Wildlife Rescue and be treated confidentially.
* Welcome members of the public as they arrive at Wildlife Rescue and direct them to the appropriate staff member
* Provide water and direction to sit comfortably if required, notify staff members of arrival
* Speak to the current campaigns, mission, vision, and work of Wildlife Rescue (training will be provided)
* Answer questions and provide appropriate resources (e.g. FAQs about wildlife, newsletters, etc)
* Encourage donations through TipTap terminal and process paperwork as required
* Small crowd management in the case that multiple members of the public arrive at the same time
* Welcome community and corporate volunteer groups to our site as needed
* Recording and logging all hours on MyImpactPage
Time Commitment
All Wildlife Rescue volunteers start with a minimum commitment of 100 hours. Approximately 4-20 hours a week (dependent on availability) on a consistent weekly basis. The shifts will take place at Wildlife Rescue during operational hours, with flexibility as to the day.

Description
Wildlife Rescue Association was established in 1979 to rehabilitate wildlife affected by human activity and provide education to the public on co-existing with urban wildlife. Before Wildlife Rescue was founded, there was no rehabilitation service for wildlife in Metro Vancouver and members of the public had nowhere to turn when they found an animal in distress. Thanks to the determination of a small band of volunteers, a small rehabilitation centre was established at the Nature House on the north side of Burnaby Lake.
Today, Wildlife Rescue runs its wildlife hospital on the south shore of Burnaby Lake where it treats animals from around the province of BC. Since 1979 we have treated more than 100,000 animals. Metro Vancouver is developing rapidly and animals living in the urban environment face many challenges such as busy roads, loss of habitat, pollution, pet predation, poisoning, unsecured garbage and direct human cruelty. With a team of professional wildlife rehabilitators and an army of volunteers we are able to provide temporary refuge to a diverse range of animals. We are not a wildlife sanctuary and once the animals in our care are healthy and ready to live in the wild, we release them back to their natural habitat.
Our public education and outreach includes a wildlife helpline, as well as presentations and displays throughout Greater Vancouver. 80% of our funds come through donations and without support from the public, local business and the wider community, none of the work we do would be possible.
