Event Description:

Join staff in weeding and maintaining the bio-retention area at Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve.

Volunteer Duties:

Volunteers will use handsaws or loppers to cut and remove invasive plants from designated areas. Volunteers under the age of 16 will not be able to use hand tools to cut away invasive plants, but will be able to help drag them out and pile them up.

Volunteer Impact:

Weeds and invasive species out-compete the native plants that were planted in our flower beds and retention areas. This destroys the aesthetic and wildlife value of our planted beds and they reduce the efficiency of our bio-retention areas. By removing these problem plants we are giving our native species a chance to grow and we are keeping the Preserve beautiful.

Work Environment:

Volunteers will be working outside on uneven ground as we pull and remove weeds from the the bio-retention area. There is a significant amount of blackberry vine to be removed. There are thorns. There is a restroom on site (about 300 yards away). There may be contact with snakes and bugs. The work that we are doing will be physically demanding.

Volunteer Requirements:

Pre-registration is required. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Everyone who volunteers must sign a release form. If anyone is under the age of 18, then a parent or guardian must sign their form as well. Volunteers under 16 years old will be required to have an adult on site during the entire event.

Other Instructions:

Please bring a water bottle, wear sturdy close-toed shoes and heavy duty clothing you can get dirty. We will supply the tools and work-gloves. Unfortunately our work gloves are not leather. It is recommended that you bring a good pair of leather work gloves for this event.

Tools used: We will be using our hands, shovels, and loppers to pull and cut weeds.

Group Registration:

A group contact must email prvolunteer@raleighnc.gov with a number of slots to reserve. Please also include the event name and, if applicable, which shift(s) you would like to assist with.
