MVA is a statewide organization focused on the expansion of research-based, high-quality mentoring in Virginia. VISTA Members will help further our mission to provide training and sustainable support systems to mentors and mentoring programs to increase the quality and quantity of mentoring for Virginia's youth.

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America), the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps, is a national service program offering members a modest living allowance in exchange for their commitment of a year of service while they build a permanent infrastructure to help alleviate poverty and find community self-sustainability.

MVA is seeking to place an AmeriCorps VISTA Member with MEGA Mentors (MM) in Chesterfield, VA. MEGA Mentor's mission is to teach life skills, provide meaningful learning experiences, and build leadership skills in African American and other underrepresented Chesterfield County Public School students through mentoring, tutoring, experiential field trips, and recognition. They believe in equal education for all and that all children deserve an equal opportunity to share in America's bounty through education and mentorship. MM works with public and private organizations to bring resources and attention to the needs of students to improve their success rate.

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree or some college experience encouraged; applicants should be enthusiastic, committed to the ethic of service, and interested in serving in Virginia. Qualities sought after include good organizational skills; communication and writing skills are a plus; ability to work with others from a diverse background; as well as self-initiative and past experience in volunteering, mentoring, and/or within the nonprofit sector.

Benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA Service: The VISTA Member is paid an annual living stipend at 10% above the local poverty rate with an estimate of $16,200 based on the Richmond location rate. AmeriCorps VISTAs will receive a $6,495 education award or a $1,800 cash stipend of appreciation at the end of a year of service. Learn more about the Segal Education Award. Federal student loan forbearance, health care, childcare, life insurance, and some relocation expenses are all available as well as training through AmeriCorps and MENTOR Virginia. AmeriCorps VISTA is the only AmeriCorps program that allows members to earn federal non-competitive eligibility (NCE), giving members an edge in the federal hiring process upon completion of their service year. The AmeriCorps VISTA position is full-time and yearlong, with a possibility of second and third-year extensions. All compensation is provided by AmeriCorps.
