It is the Nashville Dolphins' mission to improve the health and quality of life for children and adults with special needs and combat the alarmingly high statistic of drowning deaths. The Nashville Dolphins provides adaptive aquatic lessons ranging from water safety and survival through competitive swim team programming for participants at no cost. In addition, we empower our swimmers to experience the joy and pride of being a lifetime member of the Nashville Dolphins family. Our programs aim to enhance the quality, health, and safety of the daily lives of both our participants and their family members, within a safe and socially supportive community environment.

We could not provide this amazing opportunity to our swimmers without the help from volunteers in our community like you! This rewarding experience will change your life.

No experience is required for our Future Dolphins volunteers. once you sign-up we will send over a volunteer training guide for you to look at prior to your volunteer experience. All volunteers are required to get in the pool with our swimmers for Future Dolphins classes. There will also be lead instructors at each pool to guide and instruct you on what to do.

About Future Dolphins:

The Future Dolphins’ program is designed for swimmers with little to no independent swimming ability. The goal of these classes is to teach participants the basics of swimming and self-rescue skills. Our Future Dolphins’ classes can have 8-12 swimmers in a class, depending on available pool space. Each swimmer works one on one with their volunteers on individualized skills. Our goal is to pair volunteers with the same swimmer each week, so our swimmers experience consistency and volunteers can recognize even the smallest achievements week to week. We always have lead instructors in the water who are there to train and assist volunteers. All Future Dolphin volunteers are required to be in the water.

Description

Nashville Dolphins started in 2003 when our founder, Beth Scruggs, agreed to help a swimmer with Down Syndrome improve her swimming skills in order to compete in the Special Olympics. Today more than 230 swimmers participate in the aquatics programming we provide, ranging from beginners just learning to blow bubbles to long-distance champions practicing several days a week. Because swimming is a lifelong sport with far-reaching benefits for an individual’s health and well-being, we serve swimmers of all ages with no age-out policy. And because of the intensity of our mission to bring the physical and emotional benefits of swimming to people with special needs regardless of age, ability, or financial circumstances, we provide all programming at no cost to the participant.
