ORGANIZATION: Longview School

Longview School, a 5th to 12th grade non-profit, private school is looking for fluent speakers of languages other than English to volunteer to teach 2-8 hours per week at our school. Some teaching experience is preferred. The school prefers to offer a wide range of languages, so this volunteer opportunity is not limited to the languages specified in the listing.

This volunteer position starts at the end of August and runs until mid-June 2023.

The Model

Student Empowerment

Longview is based on the idea that students should have more control over their school.

  • Academically, students make choices about the classes offered and even the way content is taught.
  • Structurally, students take the lead in running the school through their participation in the school legislature and judiciary.

Skills-Based Education

Students focus on learning skills, not memorizing facts.

Learning in classes avoids busywork and worksheets, and instead replicates the work done by professionals in the field. For example, in a history class the students replicate the work of historians, sociologists, and politicians. In a Science class, students act as amateur scientists, making hypotheses, testing them, recording the results, and describing their conclusions. Assignments have meaning beyond leading to a course grade or preparation for a test.

Deeply Engaging Content

Students learn by thinking, debating, and presenting ideas, rather than just passively absorbing the ideas of others.

Socio-Emotional Development

Students are supported in becoming resourceful, independent, confident, self-regulating young adults. Being smart isn’t enough. Our students also learn how to be happy people, who are self-aware and socially adept.

About Longview School

Mission Statement

Longview School is an independent, private school for 5th through 12th-grade students, located in Brewster, NY. Our students learn rigorous academics, but academic knowledge is only a part of education. We help students succeed in life by developing confidence and responsibility as well.

Longview is a democratic school. This means that the students have direct access to and control over their environment. This in turn leads to a sincere investment in contributing to their surroundings, their curricula, and their community. The school is run by a democratic meeting of the staff, students, and any other members of the community. Much like the old-fashioned town hall, issues are raised and discussed, and solutions are proposed, voted on, and enacted with majority support. By teaching our students that they can alter their environment, we are engaging them in higher-level thinking about their education, their autonomy, and their roles in the community. This is a lesson they then take with them into the wider world as capable adults ready to acknowledge, address, and find solutions for the problems they encounter.
