IGNITING CREATIVITY

Spark Central breaks barriers to creativity like cost, confidence, and access by offering imaginative programs, access to innovative technology, and an inclusive creative community for folks of all economic backgrounds. Everyone deserves the opportunity to forge the future they imagine. As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, we rely on the generosity of people like you to keep our programs free so income is never a barrier to opportunity.

We have lots of programs that could use your help, and we've broken them down to three categories. No special skills or experience is necessary to volunteer for any of these - just bring your best self!

  1. Mentor youth in their creativity. In our space, we offer free public programs that ignite creativity for all ages. Those who participate will grow in confidence, cultivate a growth mindset, and develop their future aspirations. As a youth program volunteer, you might assist with setting up, cleaning up, and engaging our visitors during regular station hours or at special programs like our Level Up after-school program or camps during breaks in the District 81 school year.
  2. Share your talents with our community. These volunteer opportunities offer the same creative, innovative, and imaginative explorations as our youth programs, but are intended for a broader audience. Spark Central also hosts activities and events not just for youth, but for teens, adults, and families as well. Volunteers have unique opportunities to bring their creativity to the station through drop-in programs as well as community and family events designed by passionate volunteers.
  3. Help everyone access our resources. Our station and library volunteers are critical to ensuring access to all our visitors. These volunteers help adults, teens, and youth feel safe and welcomed in our space. You can also help people access our resources by being an outreach volunteer, attending events and talking about Spark Central. We have so many more opportunities in this area, like IT volunteers, maintenance volunteers, fundraising and events volunteers - you name it, we could use it! Let us know the kind of help you'd like to provide in any capacity.

To learn more specifics about our volunteer opportunities, visit our volunteer page at spark-central.org/volunteers. To see our upcoming programs, visit our events page at spark-central.org/events.

The time commitment as a program volunteer can vary depending on the availability and commitment from the volunteer.

About Spark Central

Mission Statement

Igniting the creativity, innovation, and imagination necessary for people to forge the path to their best future.

Description

Welcome aboard!

Spark Central is a creative learning center where people of all ages can access our high-speed Internet (1,000 Mbps), technology, rich and imaginative programming, and curated book and media collection. Building on the West Central neighborhood's rail yard roots, Spark Central is at the junction between where people are, and where they want to go. We offer resources, connection, support, and learning to those who need it most on their journey to a better future.

We foster creativity for adults, teens, and kids by providing learning experiences that explore the unlikely intersections between subjects, such as poetry and science or coding and character creation. Such experiences stretch the imagination, are the root of innovation, and develop the ability to problem-solve and think critically-skills essential to success in the Information Age, where the jobs of tomorrow haven’t been created yet. From learning to code to learning to write a story, we offer community members a one-way ticket to discovering their passion, building new skills, and growing the confidence needed for wherever they want to go.

Thanks to many generous donors, we are able to offer access to our resources and many of our programs at no charge and keep adult workshops affordable. Kids programs are always available at no cost because we believe that all children, regardless of income, deserve the chance to be imaginative, to play, and to find their inner genius.
