The Red Cross Community Volunteer Leadership Program VISTA Project is designed with the goal of increasing the impact of the Southeastern Colorado Chapter by increasing the capacity of its programs, staff, and volunteers. This will be done by providing greater support to the Southeastern Colorado territory of the Red Cross and further developing the Community Volunteer Leadership program. The AmeriCorps VISTA Member will receive a high-level view of executive management and collaborate with local agencies and work with them to move people out of poverty by creating a strategy of education and bridging the gap between hunger and abundance.
Member Activity: Attend an On-site Orientation Training at the American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado office location to understand business operation protocols and obtain a greater awareness concerning on-going Red Cross projects in the area.2. Attend meetings with the Site Supervisor (Executive Director) and other Red Cross professionals, community partners, and/or volunteer leads to assist with program implementation and stay informed on pertinent information involving chapter operations.3. Collaborate with local agencies and professionals to gain understanding of community demographics and needs. This will include attending local community events.4. Overall, this position will weave into the territories of executive management, communications, media relations, disaster presentations, board management, and cultivation of donors. A high-level view of executive management in the world’s number one non-profit organization.
Facilitate the transition from the current VISTA member to the incoming volunteer by introducing the new volunteer to previous contacts/partners. These communications may include reiterating or clarifying what the responsibilities of the position are to the contacts/partners/staff members. Additionally, the VISTA member must also ensure that the most recent contact information for community partners and staff members have been provided to the incoming volunteer.2. Mentor and supervise the incoming volunteer by having the volunteer shadow and then individually perform all responsibilities of the position 1 month prior to leaving the position.3. Create the "Incoming Executive Leadership Assistant Guide" with mentorship and guidance from the Executive Director Information will cover the incoming volunteer onboarding process, general knowledge on outstanding Red Cross projects and business operation tasks, partnerships in need of follow-up or development, and any other recommendations for the position can all be included in this guide.
