The Cancer Legal Resource Center (CLRC) is a program of the Disability Rights Legal Center. The CLRC provides free information and resources on cancer-related legal issues to cancer survivors, caregivers, health care professionals, employers, and others coping with cancer across the country. CLRC provides assistance through its national Telephone Assistance Line (866-THE-CLRC and www.clrcintake.org), in-person workshops and community outreach events, webinars, and educational publications about legal issues.
Under the supervision of CLRC attorneys and staff, our volunteers gain hands-on experience assisting people with cancer, cancer survivors, their families, friends, and others affected by cancer by working on our Telephone Assistance Line, interviewing CLRC callers over the phone and providing assistance and information on cancer-related legal issues. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to draft correspondence, conduct legal research, update materials and resources, and complete other tasks as needed.
Volunteers have the opportunity to gain substantive experience in a wide variety of state and federal subject areas, including, but not limited to:
- Health Law (including insurance regulations and appeals);
- Employment Law (including employment discrimination and labor regulations);
- Public Benefits (including SSI, SSDI, Medicare, and Medicaid);
- Advance Planning (including wills, trusts, advance health care directives, and end of life planning);
- Consumer Law (including managing medical debt and bankruptcy);
Remote volunteer opportunities are available. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
Please note: Our greatest need is for volunteers who are willing and eager to speak with callers over the phone. If you are not comfortable with the sensitive nature of some of these calls, your opportunities to volunteer with us may be more limited. CLRC requires a minimum 50 hour commitment per semester, and requires regular shifts of 4 hours or more at a time. We may be willing to make very limited exceptions to those requirements.
If you are interested in applying to volunteer with the Cancer Legal Resource Center or have questions about how to get involved, please contact us at clrc@drlcenter.org or visit www.cancerlegalresources.org
