To build better futures for adults by teaching life and work skills that empower them to reach their highest potential.
Job Title:ESL Teacher/Conversational Partner Volunteer
Location (Provide Address)
The ESL Teacher/Conversational Partner Volunteer will work out of a current Literacy Action site and at designated events and activities as identified by the Volunteer Coordinator or LAI staff.
Responsibilities
- Volunteers must work one-on-one and in small groups with adult learners of ESOL to help them practice English.
- Assist teachers with coursework and everyday tasks.
- Encourage and engage students to speak in English.
- Assign students materials that correspond with their level of English
- Always observe confidently and assist with student growth
Reports To
The teacher assistant will report to and communicate with the Teacher and Volunteer Coordinator.
Length of Appointment
Schedule is to be determined by the ESL Teacher/Conversational Learner Volunteer and Teacher. With minimum participation of once a week.
Time Commitment:
After a volunteer has been assigned to a class, we ask that the volunteer commit to serving in that class until the end of those 8 weeks
Qualifications:
Sensitive and adaptable to learners’ differences and needs. Acceptable of people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ages. Commitment to bettering lives through education. Patience and enthusiasm. (No previous teaching experience necessary.)
Training:
ESL Teacher/Conversational Learner Volunteers are required to attend training and observation to participate. ESL Teacher/Conversational Partner Volunteer will be familiarized with all Literacy Action resources available.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be culturally aware/sensitive
- Fluent in English
- Persistent

LAI provides free classes for adults who need to improve their literacy and workplace skills. The program helps students reach their potential through learning basic and essential reading, writing, critical-thinking, math, computer, job readiness, and academic skills necessary to master the GED tests.
