Southern Maine Agency on Aging is seeking assistance with the Meals on Wheels program. Our Meal Sites are in need of Kitchen Assistant Meal Packers as well as Deliver Drivers and backup Drivers! This is an urgent need for the following specific geographic areas: Sanford, Yarmouth, Portland, and South Portland. Applicant must reside nearby or be willing to drive to one of the specified locations to volunteer.
Volunteer position title: Meals on Wheels Driver/Packer
What, specifically, will the volunteer(s) do?
Kitchen Help/Packer: Prepare the meals for the delivery routes. Pack in bread and milk, pay close attention to dietary restrictions and client preferences.
Driver: Pick up meals at the appropriate dining center, deliver meals to the homebound seniors on their route and return to the meal center upon completion of the deliveries.
Backup Driver: Have a flexible schedule on delivery days to fill-in for a regular driver that may call out. This position may lead to other opportunities at the meal site such as packing, delivering, or clerical work.
Experience & skills needed by the volunteers: Must have a valid driver’s license and current up-to-date car insurance. Must be able to pass a background check and driving-record check.
Number of volunteers needed? At least 4. As needed; to fill current open positions.
Where can the volunteer(s) work? Volunteers will work at the Meal Site
When can the volunteer(s) work? Meals on Wheels sites are active on Tuesdays and Thursdays with some exceptions (Yarmouth Meal Site is active on Tuesdays only).
What length of commitment is expected of the volunteer(s)? Each opportunity would require about 2 hours of time on a given day. You can volunteer as little as one day per week or as much as 2 days per week.

What benefits or considerations do you offer the volunteer(s)? Delivery Driver volunteers can get .45 cents per mile reimbursement from the meal center to deliver meals and back to the meal center!
When will volunteer training/orientation occur? Training will be provided at the meal center before the volunteer first starts. A new volunteer will be asked to attend a volunteer orientation.
**Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, proof of vaccination status is required for all in-person opportunities at Southern Maine Agency on Aging.**

Southern Maine Agency on Aging Volunteer Services provides opportunities to make a difference in the community through volunteer service. Volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, meals on wheels, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. We offer maximum flexibility and choice to our volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of the over age 55 volunteer to opportunities in selected imapct service areas to help solve community problems. RSVP volunteers receive supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed.
