Back to School Fair Volunteer Opportunity

ORGANIZATION: St. Francis Center

QUICK OVERVIEW

Come help volunteer at our Back to school event!

MISSION

Since 1972, St. Francis Center has provided relief and support to homeless and extremely low-income individuals and families in Los Angeles. Much more than a soup kitchen or a food pantry, we offer a unique range of services to sustain and empower those in need. Welcoming all with joy, dignity and compassion, we dedicate ourselves every day to Serving Hope in our community.

IMPACT

St. Francis Center's pantry program serves extremely low-income families, seniors, students, and individuals who are experiencing food insecurity in Los Angeles. On average, our pantry program families make around $14,000 a year - well below the federal poverty level. Most of their income goes to cover rent and utilities, which doesn't leave a lot left for families to purchase items for their children like school supplies, new shoes, and books.

VOLUNTEER ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteers can expect to help run booths, hand out backpacks and food, and help with set up and clean up! During the Back to School Fair, we will distribute school supplies to 200+ of our pantry program youth who also participated in our summer camp programs!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

St. Francis Center's Back to School Fair is on August 13, 2022, from 12 - 2:30 pm.

Description

Our two main programs include our Unhoused Wellbeing - Breakfast Service and the Family Wellbeing - Food Pantry Distribution. Our to-go breakfast service is part of our Unhoused Wellbeing Program. Members of our unhoused community visit the centermost mornings for a hot coffee and breakfast which also includes a bag of lunch for later. Our Food Pantry distribution is part of our Family Well-Being Program. Extremely low-income families, seniors, students, and individuals from the community visit the center once a week for groceries (our distribution days are from Wednesday-Saturday). They receive a pantry program box that includes a variety of fresh produce, bread, and canned goods.
