Companionship Volunteer for Hospice Patients & Families

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Gentiva Hospice Harrisonburg

Companionship volunteers are needed to visit with and enrich the quality of life for a patient with a life-shortening diagnosis who is receiving hospice care. This program allows volunteers to be matched one on one with a patient. The volunteer will be able to have his/her autonomy to choose various ways to offer kindness through companionship, which may include general dialogue, reading, sharing musical talents, and at times just simply holding their hand. The volunteer can also set their own schedule that is convenient for both parties. Typically a volunteer would make a companionship visit 2-4 times monthly for approx. 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Additionally, visits could involve helping the family cope by offering respite time as the family member runs errands or running errands for them, helping with light housework or helping to prepare meals. Whether you are retired, a student needing volunteer hours, or just want to make a difference for others, this is an extremely meaningful and rewarding way to contribute to your community.
