Literations improves the literacy skills of young children through grade four by engaging professionally trained older adult volunteers as literacy coaches in our partner schools and after-school programs. We serve communities where opportunity gaps exist to ensure all students have the resources to become strong readers, develop confidence and unleash their potential in the classroom and beyond. Our highly-effective programming annually serves thousands of children in the Greater Boston area. Literations is an affiliate of AARP Foundation Experience Corps, a national leader in engaging older adult coaches to improve student literacy in grades 1-4.

The Program Assistant, under the supervision of the Program Staff, is responsible for supporting the management, communication and technical support of coaching sessions for a cluster of sites. A successful Program Assistant will collaborate and work closely with the Site Team Leader (STL) and Program Staff to help with the administrative and oversight of the program and the tools Literations uses to track the program. A Program Assistant serves a minimum of 450 hours during the program year (approx. 15 hours per week over 3-4 days) and attends regular Site Leadership Meetings held by Literations central office. We are seeking 2 candidates to support our Boston after-school programs. Program times for these locations typically operate from 2-6pm, Monday - Thursday.

The Literations program is organized into groups. Each grouping includes several schools or afterschool sites. Each site has a team of volunteer Literacy Coaches (LC) serving between 4 and 10 hours per week, providing literacy coaching to children who could benefit from additional reading support.

  • Cover and manage the site on the STL weekly day off supporting the LCs and general oversight of the program
  • Occasional substitute or assist with coordination of a substitute for absent Literacy Coaches
  • Support staff and volunteer leaders with regular literacy coach observations and student progress assessments/data to ensure program consistency and quality control
  • Other duties as assigned

About Literations

One Federal Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110, US

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
