Volunteer Opportunity in the Project of Ecological Restoration & Organic Agriculture at the Pájaro B

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: FUNDAR-Galapagos (English)

The vegetation of Galápagos Islands is increasingly threatened by the growing number of introduced and invasive plants. Those plant species are replacing the native and endemic vegetation, which causes severe changes in the whole ecosystem. For that reason in 2005 FUNDAR Galápagos started a project at the CEDEVIS (Sustainable Lifestyle Demonstration Centre) whose aim is to restore its natural ecosystem, allowing ecological processes to occur in the most natural way achievable with native and endemic species that once occupied the moist vegetation zone (agricultural zone) on the island of Santa Cruz. To continue that project we need (at least) one volunteer who would like to work at the RESERVA PÁJARO BRUJO for at least 2 months on the following tasks:

- Organic Agriculture, Permaculture, restoration of the native vegetation, Continue the plant inventory and the plant sample collection - Investigate about the history of the finca - Continue the restoration of the native forest of Cat’s Claw - Design and realize a project to restore the former vegetation of the Cedrela-forest - Work together with botanists from the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) in the project "experimental restoration of the native vegetation in the CEDEVIS".

It is advantageous to have some basic knowledge of botany, basic agriculture and good Spanish language skills. Any ways, here is a good place to start learning.

It´s a great oppotunity for you to learn all about the Galapagos Islands and a good part of Ecuador; a lot of fun and adventures with people from everywhere.

Cost:

Shorts Participation periods (1 up to 4 weeks) costs include lodging and logistical expenses on the part of FUNDAR Galapagos daily cost: $ 20 US.

For longer participation periods from 1 to 6 moths Program, there is no cost or fee.

Participants are also responsible for covering food, personal costs and transportation to and from Galapagos.
