Literacy Action Mission

Job Title:Literacy Action Teacher Assistant (TA)
Location
The TA will work out of a current Literacy Action site and at designated events and activities as identified by the Volunteer Coordinator or LAI staff.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the LAI staff and/or teacher. The TA will assist their designated teacher with everyday tasks such as lesson plans and supplements from the curriculum. The TA will also facilitate tutoring sessions for students that are struggling with the subject. TA’s must be available to volunteer on-site or virtually as students request.
- Assist with Teacher with everyday task
- Attend tutoring sessions as scheduled. If an absence is anticipated, notify program staff
- Review lessons with students one-on-one or in small groups
- Assign materials and advance levels when appropriate
- Always observe confidentiality
- Keep staff informed about tutoring experience, job assignments, or any concerns you may have regarding the program
Reports To
The teacher assistant will report to and communicate with the Teacher and Volunteer Coordinator.
Length of Appointment
Schedule is to be determined by the TA and Teacher. With a minimum participation of once a week.
Time Commitment
After a volunteer has been assigned to a class, we ask that the volunteer commit to serving in that class until the end of that 8-week period.
Qualifications
Sensitive and adaptable to learners’ differences and needs. Acceptable of people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ages. Commitment to bettering lives through education. Patience and enthusiasm. (No previous teaching experience necessary.)
Training
TA are required to attend training and observation to participate. TA will be familiarized with all Literacy Action resources available.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Be open-minded and persistent, and can work with adults of various backgrounds. Possess good interpersonal and organizational skills. Possess characteristics of responsibility, desire to help others, discretion, and flexibility. Knowledge of basic academic skill application and the ability to demonstrate the successful application of various academic skills. Ability to work independently, applying critical thinking skills and problem-solving to multiple situations.

You are available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.

LAI provides free classes for adults who need to improve their literacy and workplace skills. The program helps students reach their potential through learning basic and essential reading, writing, critical-thinking, math, computer, job readiness, and academic skills necessary to master the GED tests.
