These incredible volunteers give the gift of presence when death is imminent so that no one should have to die alone.
The role of vigil volunteer is to be with hospice patients in the last hours of their lives. The volunteer while sitting at the bedside might read a comforting poem or prayer, listening to soothing music, or just sitting quietly holding the patient's hand. The main role for these volunteers to be present for the patient, and also support families during this special time through the gift of presence.
A thorough training is provided free of charge. There are additional requirements for a background check, and TB testing are provided free of charge. There is an additional requirement for vigil volunteers who will complete 2 hours extra training which will focus on what to expect in the last hours of living and cultural differences related to dying.
We provide caring, compassionate end-of-life care to patients and their caregivers throughout the Lehigh Valley (Northampton, Lehigh Counties). The patients who we serve reside in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living buildings, and personal homes.
Please contact our hospice volunteer coordinator for further information either by phone (610-266-0134) or email kathleen.oconnor@promedica.org.
