ORGANIZATION: FAMILY PROMISE OF METRO EAST

Can you sleep almost anywhere? Do you have a passion for helping children and their families who are experiencing houselessness? Do you want one of the easiest, yet hardest to fill volunteer positions available? Are you dependable but need a position that only needs to be filled at night? Becoming a member of Family Promise of Metro East’s Snore Corp is the volunteer job for you!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Arrive at the host site by 9 pm. (Most host sites are at churches, but could be other organizations too.)
  • Spend an hour or two with our guest families.
  • Go to sleep! (Cots or blow-up beds and clean bedding provided.)
  • Be awake about 6-6:30. Exact times may vary depending on host site’s schedule and the time of year.
  • Depending on host site, you may be asked to help set out a continental breakfast.
  • You may have to share sleeping space with another Snore Corp member, so get your friends and family to join too and volunteer sleep together!

Requirements

  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Ability to be kind, courteous and thoughtful to people of all ages and from all walks of life
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Able to handle emergent situations if they happen with calmness (this is rare)
  • Ability to work with a variety of volunteer coordinators, as each host site has their own.

Training & Supervision

  • Attend general volunteer training available in person or virtually.
  • Completed Trauma Informed Care and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training
  • Reports to Family Promise Metro East Executive Director and Host Sites' Volunteer Coordinator

Time Commitment

  • As little as one night a month, or as much as you would like. We will work with your schedule.

  • 09:00 PM to 06:30 AM
    Choose your own number of shirts, from several nights a week to one night a month

Description

Family Promise of Metro East (serving NE & SE Portland, Oregon) helps our community coordinate to compassionately address the root causes of family homelessness. Our goal is to address the issue holistically, providing prevention services before families reach crisis, shelter and case management when they become homeless, and stabilization programs once they have secured housing to ensure they remain independent. We tap existing local resources to empower families towards economic stability. Families come to us in crisis; we help them rebuild their lives with new skills and ongoing support using a community based model.
