ORGANIZATION: Council on Aging of Buncombe County

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) Volunteer Counselors are trained to be the go-to people for seniors and Medicare beneficiaries. Volunteers are responsible for providing balanced, unbiased, accurate guidance and information with which our clients can make an informed decision. There is an extensive online training, after which they will receive certification and see clients 2 - 4 times a month and/or counsel clients over the phone or in the office.

SHIIP counselors will need to be computer literate with good written and oral communication skills. They’ll need the ability to sensitively work with seniors, counseling them about issues that can be intimidating and confusing, as well as the ability to retain information relevant to health insurance provisions and claims filing procedures.

We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.
