Introduction to this Volunteer Opportunity:
Having the right insurance is essential, especially In economically challenging times. Seniors that are currently on Medicare and Seniors that are new to Medicare can become very confused about which benefits are right for them.
When seniors don't have the support system they need, they can often spiral into situations that are hard to climb out of.
Together, we can help change that!

Council on Aging of Buncombe County can help you choose the best Medicare Coverage for your care needs. Our SHIIP (Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program) offers free individual Medicare Counseling sessions in Buncombe and Henderson counties.
We are honored to have been awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the North Carolina Department of Insurance for outstanding achievements and services for out Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)!

How YOU can Help:
Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) Volunteer Counselors are trained to be the go-to people for seniors and Medicare beneficiaries. Volunteers are responsible for providing balanced, unbiased, accurate guidance and information with which our clients can make an informed decision. There is an extensive online training class, after which you will need to receive certification, and then you will shadow with a current certified counselor, until you're ready to help clients on your own.

SHIIP counselors will need to be computer literate with good written and oral communication skills. They’ll need the ability to sensitively work with seniors, counseling them about issues that can be intimidating and confusing, as well as the ability to retain information relevant to health insurance provisions and claims filing procedures.

We are very flexible and will work with your schedule.

The safety of you and our clients is our highest priority. Here's what's required for this role:

• Clear criminal background check
• Orientation and training with Council on Aging of Buncombe County
• Computer literate with good written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to sensitively work with seniors, counseling them about issues that can be intimidating and confusing, as well as the ability to retain information relevant to health insurance provisions and claims filing procedures.
