Basic volunteer duties involved with this assignment:

  1. Walk dogs at shelter
  2. Clean up kennels
  3. Feed dogs, provide enrichment, and help with dishes and laundry as necessary

Enriching the lives of dogs at the shelter is beneficial to those providing the care as they are making a difference in the dog's lives

What specific skills will the volunteer need?

  1. To walk dogs you must be able to walk and/or stand for 2+ hour shift, bend, handle a 65+ lb dog with provided training, read kennel card instructions and follow directions, work independently
  2. To feed dogs and provide enrichment you must be able to bend, read instructional kennel cards and follow directions, work independently, and stand/walk for 2 hours while feeding

Additional information:

  • There is a feeding shift at 7:30 am and 1:30 pm daily for both dogs and cats.
  • Enrichment (filling KONGS and bones with wet food, peanut butter, etc.) can be done between 9 am and 6 pm daily. The KONGS are passed out after feeding.
  • Dog care volunteers can come in anytime between 7:30 am and 8 pm M-F and between 8 am and 7:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. You will need to have internet access and be tech savvy so you can sign up in the online portal prior to your shift.
  • Humane Society is looking for volunteers to make a weekly commitment when working in either dog care or cat care.

Description

VANTAGE Aging promotes positive aging through a variety of programs and services for older adults. Our nonprofit organization serves 38 counties and is headquartered in Akron, Ohio. In Summit and Medina Counties, we facilitate the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for those 55 and older who want to make a meaningful impact in the community. We also offer employment training, home care and home health aide assistance, nutrition and home-delivered meal services, alcohol and drug addiction counseling, and mental health and prevention services.
