Service Description:

The Center for Urban Ecology and Sustainability (CUES) at Butler University is a leader in community-engaged projects that improve environmental wellbeing and work toward social justice. Our mission is to research, educate, partner, and empower Butler faculty, staff, and students and community partners in the research and establishment of best practices in urban ecology and sustainability that benefit society, the environment, and the economy. As such, the CUES offers broad expertise to the Indianapolis community in education, nutrition and wellness, environmental health, business development and management, food production and urban farming, and greenspace management.

In this position, you will improve environmental wellbeing and food access in the Indianapolis community by co-developing sustainability and social justice projects with community partners and build capacity in the CUES to operationalize those projects through our Sustainability Leadership Cohort of student interns.

This position is based in Indianapolis and will focus upon building community partnerships through the co-development of sustainability and social justice projects primarily in the Mid-North Community of Indianapolis. The Mid-North Community of focus is a low-income, primarily Black or African American community that has been subject to decades of injustice and disenfranchisement that has resulted in environmental injustice and food apartheid. This VISTA project seeks to improve the lives of individuals in the community by establishing community-driven projects that are supported by Butler University expertise and student capital. The position will require both in-office work and travel to this adjacent neighborhood. Mileage reimbursement for VISTA project travel will be provided by the organization.

We are seeking applicants who are dedicated to community building, passionate about sustainability and social justice, and have compassion for others. This position will help you to develop community collaboration skills, gain experience in project development and management, and join a network of experts to improve the lives of people in our communities.

Member Duties:

The Community Partnership Liaison VISTA will:

  1. develop community partnership guidelines
  2. create an assessment approach for student learning outcomes and community partnership outcomes
  3. design training materials on implicit bias and cultural competency
  4. develop relationships with a minimum of five community partners and co-create projects that improve food access and/or environmental health
  5. establish a plan for continuing partnerships beyond the one-year VISTA term

During your VISTA term, you will be one of two VISTA members serving with the Center for Urban Ecology and Sustainability at Butler University. Both VISTA member positions will work together to achieve the goals and duties outlined. The CUES Assistant Director will provide mentoring and professional development opportunities during your term.
