Between 2021-2022 more than 1,000 Afghan refugees came to Austin looking to rebuild their life after fleeing persecution and war. Austin Jews and Partners for Refugees in partnership with Refugee Services of Texas created Salaam Neighbors to hep families who are currently struggling to adjust to life in Austin. Salaam Neighbors partners 3-5 individuals or 2-3 family units with a family. Salaam Neighbors teams work with RST case managers to help families in the five areas they have the most needs. These include:
1. Medical Appointments
2. Enrolling in ESL classes/school
3. Finding employment
4. Connecting to community resources
5. Going to Austin parks, museums, and other fun things!
