ORGANIZATION: Cook Children's Medical Center

  • 18 people are interested

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Child Life Zone (CLZ) Fun Facilitator volunteer is to engage inpatient/outpatient children and their families in the variety of entertainment and distraction activities offered in the CLZ.

ENVIRONMENT: The Child Life Zone includes a music recording studio, a TV production studio, the Flip Side (a teen room), and the Bomar Library for children.

The CLZ Fun Facilitator volunteer will:

1. Understand that every interaction with a child, family member, guest, or visitor has an impact and makes a difference for that person.
2. Check in with CLZ staff to discuss planned activities for the day and review the activity calendar.
3. Arrive on time since scheduled activities depend on the support of the CLZ volunteers. (If an emergency prevents this, notify supervisor asap prior to the shift)
4. Assist and interact with teen patients and siblings in the Flip Side, a game room for older patients. Set up video gaming equipment, movies, etc.
5. Check out children's books from the Bomar Library to patients in the absence of volunteer librarians.
6. Assist with special visitors like characters (superheroes, princesses, mascots), sports teams, the FW Zoo, aquarium, and others.
7. Assist with special parties/events like the Halloween Haunted House, Polar Express, Cookies w/Mrs. Clause, Kendra Scott jewelry making, summer day camp, and more.
8. Participate in the broadcast studio's LIVE shows for CLZ-TV Channel 2 (the hospital's TV channel for patients).
9. Facilitate group arts and crafts, and cooking activities planned by supervising staff. Check with parent or caregiver for any dietary restrictions/food allergies before offering food/drink.
10. Help prepare materials for future group activities and CLZ-TV production programming.
11. Maintain a safe, sanitary environment for all visitors to the CLZ. Clean and disinfect key boards, controllers, and other equipment or surfaces after use.
12. Monitor the area to ensure patrons adhere to safety guidelines.
13. Ensure that only children 12 years and older can be alone in the CLZ. Those under 12 must be in the care of someone 18 years and older at all times.
14. Assist other volunteers with Family Movie Night, Family Game Night, and Teen Night, events hosted in the CLZ (evening volunteers only).
15. Assist with a variety of occasional tasks like answering the phone, plugging an IV pole into an outlet, or escorting a patient back to their room.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Follow COVID protocols in place.
Consistent, weekly attendance.
Enjoy interacting with children and teens.
Enjoy working around our facility dogs. No dog allergies.
