Adult English Tutoring
Our volunteers are currently working with participants who are s refugees, asylum-seekers, and immigrants from around the world including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Burma, Central African Republic, Congo, Eritrea, Iraq, Malaysia, Mexico, Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela (amont many others).
Our English Language Training team has a special opportunity to work 1-on1 with an Adult student who has a learning disability at a location on the west or northwest side of Chicago. Please reach out for more detailed information.
Program requirements:
- Commit to 1-3 hours a week for at least 3 months.
- Interview with one of our Volunteer Facilitators
- Attend a virtual Heartland new volunteer orientation on Zoom.
- Complete a free, 12-hour ESL tutor training.
- Become a mandated reporter through the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS).
- Must live or work in Illinois.
- Be willing to submit to a background check.

Description
Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
