What Does a Hospice Volunteer Do?
The activities you will do as an Amedisys hospice volunteer may be many and varied.
Activities with patients:
Offering Companionship Reading, and writing letters and emails.
Playing chess, cards, or board games Knitting, scrapbooking, and other craft projects
Veteran to veteran visits
Emotional Support:
Making spiritual prayer calls
Attending funerals
Participating in memorial services
Offering companionship to loved ones
Making weekly tuck in calls
Making bereavement phone calls or visits
Sewing memory pillows/teddy bears
Household Activities:
Light gardening / yard work Delivering / running errands
Walking animals
Professional volunteers:
Rikki/massage/other alternative therapies Music therapy
Art therapy Hairdresser/barber/manicurist
Administrative Support:
Assisting with office duties
Answering phones
Providing help with bereavement mailing
Attending local community service and health fairs
Creating Chart-a-Lift posters
It’s our philosophy that Hospice Volunteers are part of our caregiver team. To maintain quality care for our patients and families, we have a few requirements of our hospice volunteers such as a background check, references, a statement of health and a commitment to serve for 1 -4 hours a week for six months.
** Due to covid-19 restrictions, some of the direct care with patients have been put on hold. And at all times with patients and in the Compassionate Care office, covid-19 policy and procedures are always followed. This includes washing hands, wearing masks, social distancing and daily self- assessment reporting. **

A hospice volunteer is a special part of the hospice team. If you have a desire to make a difference in the lives of the terminally ill or those who are grieving by giving of your time to assist a patient, family member, or our office staff, then you have the qualities we're looking for in our volunteers. Volunteering includes visiting with patients, creating charts of life, weekly patient phone calls, making scrap books, blankets, cards, treats, reading and playing games, and much much more.
New hospice volunteers participate in free training that provides information regarding the hospice philosophy of care.
