Mission Statement
The League of Women Voters of Seattle-King County believes that sensible, responsible civil discourse and action based on substance rather than partisanship is essential for civic improvement and that we can help make democracy work through informed participation in government.
Description
Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.
The League of Women Voters of Seattle-King County is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Formed one year after the national League of Women Voters was born out of the suffrage movement in 1920, the League of Women Voters has been at the forefront of numerous civic initiatives and accomplishments. While we do not rate or endorse political candidates, we do sponsor free, nonpartisan candidate debates and organize periodic forums on ballot issues and other important civic concerns. The League also advocates on issues such as education, transportation, land use, ethics and healthcare.
The League is Nonpartisan
As an organization, the League does not support or oppose political parties or candidates.
The League is Political
The League takes action on selected governmental issues based on a firm foundation of positions derived from careful study. The League uses these positions as a basis to support or oppose governmental policies or ballot issues.
The League is a Resource for Your Community
We are prepared to speak on civic engagement and election issues, as well as moderate candidate debates. The League also monitors elections for condo associations, resident councils, and other organizations.
