Board of Directors Opportunity: BIPOC Mental Health

Save to Favorites

Recruiting Organization: Body Reborn

Body Reborn serves BIPOC who struggle with food and body image -- many of whom experience other mental health issues that exacerbate their problems with food, including depression, anxiety, and trauma.

We are the first and only no-cost peer collective specifically for BIPOC with disordered eating.

The Board will support the work of Body Reborn and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance, while day-to-day operations will be led by Body Reborn’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO)/Executive Director (ED). The Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, Governance and Oversight
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO as they develop and implement Body Reborn’s strategic plan
  • Review outcomes and metrics created by the CEO for evaluating the organization’s impact, and regularly measure the organization’s performance and effectiveness using those metrics; review agenda and supporting materials prior to Board and committee meetings
  • Approve Body Reborn’s annual budget, financial reports, and material business decisions; be informed of - and carry out - all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Assist the CEO and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board members
  • Partner with the CEO and other Board members to ensure that Board resolutions are carried out
  • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments, as needed
  • Represent Body Reborn to stakeholders, acting as a positive ambassador for the organization
  • Ensure Body Reborn’s commitment to a diverse Board and staff that reflect the communities Body Reborn serves
  • Carry out volunteer duties as needed
  • Treat confidential information appropriately

The Board members of Body Reborn will consider Body Reborn a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. In order for Body Reborn to credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Body Reborn expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual financial contribution that is commensurate with their capacity and willingness to give.

Board Terms and participation

Body Reborn’s Board Members will serve a 2-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms. All Board members are expected to attend all Board Meetings, held quarterly (4x/ year).

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Body Reborn’s mission and/or who has a track record of Board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in philanthropy, mental health, and/or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • A commitment to and understanding of Body Reborn’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Body Reborn’s beneficiaries
  • At this time, we are extremely interested in Board members who possess professional expertise in law, marketing, social media, and/or fundraising.

We highly encourage applications from: Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), as well as Spanish speakers, people in larger bodies, first and second generation immigrants, LGBTQIA+ communities, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disabilities.

Service on Body Reborn’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
