This new fulfilling volunteer opportunity places you at the front of an ESL classroom teaching students with varying levels of English, primarily immigrants from Ukraine in East Vancouver off of Mill Plain who are working hard to learn English. Current numbers indicate that over 50 new Ukrainians arrive in the Vancouver metro area weekly and are trying to find their way in a brand new culture. With many of them struggling to find English programs due to them suffering from over capacity, we have stepped up to play a vital role in providing a safe and flexible environment for students to learn English, and then proceed toward attaining their GED if they need it.

Help PAX Learning Center further develop and deploy our ESL curriculum to ESL students in the classroom. Teach ESL to students who come from varying backgrounds and levels of English. Work with our Co-Executive Director, Paul Vasquez who has a Masters in TESOL to determine outcomes in the classroom and determine best practices that will help our students not only function in American education, but to be successful communicating in our community. Work and guide our tutors in the classroom and use them to help students who are struggling with content or lead conversation groups.

While being face to face with our GED program, PAX Learning Center has helped our students become more confident in their studies and improve their overall GED practice scores immensely; with many of them passing at least one of the four tests. Since opening in 2019, PAX has helped nearly 300 students attain their GED. While we do focus a lot on academia, we also put forth an effort to mentor our students and help them grow not only as students, but as individuals in our community as they proceed through these challenging times. Grades are important, but in many cases, life skills are just as necessary -- especially for ESL students.

We would love to have you on our team of dedicated volunteers and help these people achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams. When these people meet someone that believes in them and is willing to help them adapt to a new environment, the likelihood of them succeeding in our community triples. Help add to our success stories today!

About PAX LEARNING CENTER

Location:

305 SE Chkalov Dr. Ste 111, VANCOUVER, WA 98683, US

Mission Statement

PAX Learning Center was created by a group of dedicated educators and community members who see an increasing need to help those who dropped out of high school and are struggling day to day to survive. We at PAX are dedicated to assisting individuals who have not completed their requirements to attain a high school diploma in the Vancouver Metro area. We seek to provide academic and job skills training to these individuals in order for them to have the opportunity to walk their preferred path, whether it be higher education or a career.

Description

PAX Learning Center is a 501 c(3) nonprofit organization that aims to assist individuals who are in the lower socioeconomic tier and help them get onto their preferred path, whether that be higher education or a career. PAX is a newly established organization and is looking to grow within the Vancouver community. Currently, PAX offers tutoring services to a number of partnerships within the community to help people attain their GED. As we continue to grow, we look to host a number of programs which will include classes for GED preparation as well as career building and internship programs. In tandem with tutoring, we are also looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping the PAX Development team with different projects such as fundraising events, grant writing, marketing, and more. If you are a student looking for an opportunity to hone your craft or have a co-op requirement for a class in either of these categories, please reach out to us! We are happy to have anybody on our team who seeks to help this population, they really need our help.
