The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is looking for Walk Committee Volunteers for the Oakland Out of the Darkness Walk. The 2022 event will be on Saturday October 15 at Snow Park/Lake Merritt in Oakland. Since the Oakland Walk began in 2009, our volunteers have raised an astonishing $750,000+ and registered over 6,000 local walkers dedicated to preventing suicide and supporting survivors of loss in our community. Learn more about this event at http://www.afsp.org/oakland or contact us at sfbayarea@afsp.org for more information.

Our Walk Committee meets monthly to plan this important event (more often leading up to event day), and we are looking for support with logistics, walker and sponsor recruitment, community outreach, public relations/media outreach, volunteer coordination, and more. Because this is an annual event, there is an opportunity for volunteers to participate in the committee and other chapter events year after year to support suicide prevention and mental health in our community.

The AFSP Out of the Darkness Community Walks, held in hundreds of cities across the country, are the core of the Out of the Darkness movement, which began in 2004. These events give people the courage to open up about their own connections to the cause, and a platform to create a culture that’s smarter about mental health. Friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers walk side-by-side, supporting each other and in memory of those we’ve lost.

The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we make decisions about event details in our community, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhoods.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.

Become an AFSP volunteer in Oakland today and be part of the movement coming #TogetherToFightSuicide.
