STEM Coding Lab is Pittsburgh's only nonprofit exclusively devoted to providing computer science education to our region's under-resourced youth. We operate as an afterschool program, serving students from across the K-12 spectrum, introducing them to basic computer science concepts, as well as activities that allow them to see themselves in the shoes of a tech innovator.
We operate in Pittsburgh Public Schools, our region's charter schools, community centers, and wherever else there are opportunities to inspire young minds with CS learning. Unfortunately, there is more demand for our services than available staff time to service that demand. Therefore, STEM Coding Lab is seeking volunteers, capable of engaging young children with rudimentary CS concepts and activities.
Volunteers do not need to have computer science expertise, but rather, a commitment to serving youth, as well as an ability to engage K-12 classrooms in a kind, caring manner. Volunteers, if successful, also have an opportunity to pursue part-time employment with STEM Coding Lab.

STEM Coding Lab's mission is to provide children learning in underresourced communities with access to computer science education to better prepare them to compete in the digital world.
Description
STEM Coding Lab is the only Pittsburgh nonprofit devoted exclusively to bringing computer science education into under-resourced schools throughout our region. In providing expert instruction for both in-school and after-school settings, the work of STEM Coding Lab is designed to activate the next generation of digitally literate STEM professionals and expose those students learning in underfunded environments to lessons that will prepare them to compete in the 21st Century.
At STEM Coding Lab, we believe that early student development of basic computer science skills is a critical first step in addressing income disparities that persist throughout our city, particularly in majority-minority neighborhoods. Moreover, we believe that pursuit of racial and social justice should begin in classrooms by empowering under-resourced students with the skills needed to break cycles of generational poverty.
STEM Coding Lab works with the Pittsburgh Public School District, as well as a variety of charter schools and afterschool programs, to provide both in-school and after-school CS classes. Our goal for in-school classes is to assist teachers to integrate coding into their everyday classes - regardless of their subject area expertise.
